Our client Gloria’s contribution to the Ayton General Store has been praised recently, with store owner Jules telling her how valuable she is to the team.

“Thank you Gloria. We value your contribution to our store, you are very special to us and you are one of our best workers!” they told her.

The joy on Gloria’s face when she shared this feedback with us was truly beautiful to see and reflects the pride she takes in her work and the positive impact she has within her community.

Gloria has been helping the store with the weekly truck unload, assisting to unload and unpack the supplies that keep this tiny community on the shores of the Bloomfield River going. She works around four hours a week, allowing her to grow skills and experience, and earn an income of her very own. Her hard work, reliability, and positive attitude is obviously paying off for both Gloria and her employer.

However, keen to grow her skills even further, Gloria has also been learning an important cultural role within her family's tourism business, Walker Tours, where she helps provide the traditional Welcome to Country for visiting tour groups. By participating in these cultural presentations, she is developing valuable communication and social skills while sharing her Eastern Kuku Yalanji culture with visitors. Speaking in front of groups and representing her family and community has helped Gloria become more confident in social situations and more comfortable engaging with people from diverse backgrounds.

The combination of her fruitful and meaningful employment at the Ayton Store and her involvement in the Welcome to Country activities is helping Gloria build the skills and confidence needed to achieve greater independence. The experiences are both providing opportunities for personal growth while allowing Gloria to contribute positively to both her workplace and her community.

We are so proud to support Gloria on her journey and celebrate the progress she continues to make. Through hard work, determination, cultural pride and a willingness to learn, Gloria is showing that she can achieve her goals AND contribute to her community in very meaningful ways.

Congratulations, Gloria, on your fantastic achievements. We look forward to seeing your continued success in both your employment and cultural leadership roles.
